About the Rhode Island Passenger Test
Welcome to the free Rhode Island CDL Passenger Test practice exam. This test is designed to help you prepare for the Passenger endorsement required to operate vehicles like buses, vans, and school buses in Rhode Island. The official RI DMV Passenger test covers critical topics such as safe loading and unloading, passenger management, emergency procedures, and driving on major corridors like I-95, I-195, and Route 138.
Rhode Island requires all Passenger endorsement applicants to pass a knowledge test at the DMV Headquarters in Cranston or at regional offices in Middletown, Pawtucket, or Woonsocket. This practice test uses 20 questions similar to those on the real exam, with a focus on state-specific regulations including the Rhode Island School Bus Safety Act and local traffic laws.
Each question is based on the current CDL manual published by the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles. We recommend studying the manual thoroughly before attempting this test. The real RI DMV test has no set time limit, but we include a 25-minute timer to help you pace yourself.
After completing this practice test, you will receive feedback on your answers. Use this to identify weak areas and revisit the RI DMV handbook. Good luck on your journey to earning your Passenger endorsement in the Ocean State!
What This Test Covers

Study Tips
Study the official Rhode Island CDL Manual carefully, especially sections on passenger vehicle inspection (e.g., checking mirrors, doors, and emergency equipment). Pay attention to Rhode Island-specific requirements like the use of amber warning lights on school buses and the minimum age for school bus drivers (21). Practice on real roads: drive through the busy Fall River/Newport corridor (Route 138) and the mixing zones near the I-95/I-195 interchange.
Memorize the pre-trip inspection checklist—the RI DMV often tests this in the Passenger endorsement knowledge exam. Focus on items like seat belt function, fire extinguisher location, and first aid kit contents. Also review the Rhode Island School Bus Safety Act for laws regarding stop-arm cameras and passing stopped buses.
Use our practice test to simulate the actual exam environment. After each attempt, review explanations for incorrect answers. Join online forums for Rhode Island CDL applicants to exchange tips. Finally, schedule your knowledge test at the Cranston DMV (600 New London Ave) or your nearest regional office. Arrive early and bring your valid driver’s license and proof of residency.
