About the North Dakota General Knowledge Test

North Dakota’s roads are no joke. You’ll fight crosswinds on I-94, dodge deer on US 2, and navigate icy patches near Minot. Every question here comes straight from the North Dakota CDL manual. You won’t find filler.

We focus on what matters for ND drivers: hauling grain, livestock, and oil field equipment. You’ll also deal with sudden blizzards and the long, straight stretches that test your alertness. This practice test gets you ready for those real-world challenges.

Each question mimics the actual DMV exam. You’ll see air brake scenarios, combination vehicle inspections, and cargo securement rules. Pass this test and you’ll walk into the ND DOT with confidence.

What This Test Covers

  • Air brakes – critical for stopping heavy grain trucks on flat, icy highways near Fargo.
  • Combination vehicles – common when hauling trailers behind oil tankers in the Bakken region.
  • Cargo securement – you don’t want a tarp failure on a windy day crossing the Missouri River.
  • Vehicle inspections – ND winters mean checking tire chains and heating systems thoroughly.
  • Hazardous materials – many ND drivers haul anhydrous ammonia for farms.
  • Night driving – deer collisions spike in the rural stretches around Devils Lake.

Study Tips

Use the North Dakota CDL manual as your main guide. We base every practice question on it. Don’t skip the air brake section – it’s on every test. Study in short bursts; 20 minutes a day works better than cramming.

Visit the ND DOT website to check for fee changes and appointment slots. You’ll need to schedule your knowledge test online – walk-ins aren’t guaranteed. Bring your social security card and proof of residency. Take our practice test until you score 90% or higher consistently.

North Dakota DMV Information

You can take the General Knowledge test at any ND DOT driver license site. Popular spots include Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks, and Minot. Appointments are required – book online at dot.nd.gov. The fee for the knowledge test is $15 (covers both written and vision).

If you fail, you can retest the next day. No waiting period. But you’ll pay the $15 fee again. For the road test, expect a $60 fee and a 30–45 minute drive with an examiner. They’ll ask about air brake components, so practice under the hood.

Frequently Asked Questions
